Last week's blog closed shop earlier today and a whopping three people voted that they believe this year's American Idol will be a girl. With that in mind, we settle in for the evening as we continue to celebrate the 70s with the girls taking center stage.
Carly Smithson, 24, San Diego, CA
Heart’s "Crazy on You"
Very polished vocals. Excellent way to kick off the evening for the girls. Much better than anything most of the guys did last night.
Syesha Mercado, 21, Miami, FL
The Dramatics’ "Me and Mr. Jones"
In the interview before the performance, Syesha reveals her commercial acting experience. Perhaps she should stick to acting. Her song choice is boring and the performance is lackluster. I’m not at all impressed.
Brooke White, 24, Van Nuys, CA
Carly Simon’s "Your So Vain"
With guitar in hand, Brooke, no doubt, chose the perfect song for her voice. Bravo! Crap. Is she stealing the vote I planned to cast for Carly? Best of the night plus the husband loves her.
Remiele Malubay, 20, Miramar, FL
Thelma Houston’s "Don’t Leave Me This Way"
I realize it’s early in the evening but based on three of the four performances so far tonight, girls are kicking some serious butt. Remiele’s voice is strong and enticing despite the poor song choice.
Kristy Lee Cook, 24, Selma, OR
Linda Rondstadt’s "You’re No Good"
I’m having hair envy. She looks great and she sounds pretty good. Not the best of the night though. Still, she should be safe come tomorrow night. As the husband says, it was much better than last week.
Amanda Overmyer, 23, Mulberry, IN
Kansas’ "Carry On My Wayward Son"
Started out strong with the chorus but when she got into the meat of the song – the slower part – the vocals go astray and at one point, she looks as if she’s almost forgotten the words and her voice completely unravels into a pile of messiness. That’s too bad because I’m an Overmyer fan.
Alaina Whitaker, 16, Tulsa, OK
Olivia Newton-John’s "Hopelessly Devoted to You"
She delivers the same flavor of softness that Olivia Newton-John brought to it back in the 70s. I love singing this song but I don’t sing it well. Alaina, however, did a pretty good job despite a few pitch problems.
Alexandrea Lushington, 17, Douglasville, GA
Chicago’s "If You Leave Me Now"
Seems like an odd song choice, particularly for a 17-year-old. This is a far cry from what she gave us last week on "Spinning Wheel." I applaud her bravery but it just didn’t work for me. Based on her body language, I’ve got a feeling Alexandrea knows she made a wrong turn.
Kady Malloy, 18, Houston, TX
Heart’s "Magic Man"
Great outfit but the vocals lack the power a song like this deserves. As the man says, it was flat.
Asia’h Epperson, 19, Joplin, MO
Eric Carmen’s "All By Myself"
Asia’h looks absolutely beautifully but something is terribly flawed in her voice all the way through. Some people will remember the ending but I wouldn’t bother. As Simon comments, "Know your limitations."
I've put in red text the ladies' names I think are at risk. Now argue with me by commenting below or I'm not going to play along any more! BTW, I think Asia'h and Alexandrea stand the greatest chance of going home.
