Poor, Poor Alaina

After Ryan’s announcement that 31 million votes came in last night, we’re left wondering why he didn’t include the number of votes cast Tuesday night considering that two girls from last night and two guys from the night before are going home. But before they do, a montage flashing back to the 70s proves slightly more digestible than last week’s 60’s offering except for the annoying and distracting audio issues.
Ryan asks the back row to stand up and here’s how it goes down for the following guys:
Michael Johns is safe. So is Chikezie Eze. Ryan tells Jason Castro that it’s bad news for him because he’ll have to prep for more interviews next week as he’s sticking around. Now it’s down to Jason Yeagar and Danny Noriega. Ryan says one is safe and one is going home. Too bad. After Tuesday night they both should be going home but it’s Jason who gets the boot.
Now it’s the girls’ turn and Kristy Lee Cook, Asia’h Epperson and Brooke White are all safe. That leaves us with Amanda Overmyer and Alexandrea Lushington – both of who are at big risk but only one gets the swan song. It is … Alexandrea.
Back from the break and we’re gonna knock off the second girl. Carly Smithson is thankfully safe. Remiele Malubay is relieved to learn she too is safe as is Syesha Mercado. Will it be Alaina Whitaker or Kady Malloy? Shock! Kady is safe and she’s just as surprised as the rest of us. Based on Kady’s reaction, I’d say she fully expected to be going home tonight. One thing is for certain, Alaina sure didn’t see a departure in her future. She’s undoubtedly shaken by the news and is so upset she isn’t sure she can sing one last time – but she pulls through and we’re all saddened.
It’s down to our final cast-off as Luke Menard and Robbie Carrico are invited to center stage while Jason Castro and all three Davids learn they are safe. So, who will it be? We say bye-bye to the wig-wearing Robbie.
Did I mention that there are multiple plugs for upcoming American Idol Events including the return of "Idol Gives Back"? Put it in your Outlook folks because on Wednesday, April 9, this event which sadly makes the finale look dull, will feature such guests as Brad Pitt, Snoop Dogg, Daughtry, Miley Cyrus and Reese Witherspoon.
It’s been a long day so if time permits, I’ll post again tomorrow to analyze tonight’s show and compare my picks with the actual results. ‘Til then, ta-ta.

Brooke White Shines Bright Tonight!

Last week's blog closed shop earlier today and a whopping three people voted that they believe this year's American Idol will be a girl. With that in mind, we settle in for the evening as we continue to celebrate the 70s with the girls taking center stage.

Carly Smithson, 24, San Diego, CA
Heart’s "Crazy on You"
Very polished vocals. Excellent way to kick off the evening for the girls. Much better than anything most of the guys did last night.

Syesha Mercado, 21, Miami, FL
The Dramatics’ "Me and Mr. Jones"
In the interview before the performance, Syesha reveals her commercial acting experience. Perhaps she should stick to acting. Her song choice is boring and the performance is lackluster. I’m not at all impressed.

Brooke White, 24, Van Nuys, CA
Carly Simon’s "Your So Vain"
With guitar in hand, Brooke, no doubt, chose the perfect song for her voice. Bravo! Crap. Is she stealing the vote I planned to cast for Carly? Best of the night plus the husband loves her.
Remiele Malubay, 20, Miramar, FL
Thelma Houston’s "Don’t Leave Me This Way"
I realize it’s early in the evening but based on three of the four performances so far tonight, girls are kicking some serious butt. Remiele’s voice is strong and enticing despite the poor song choice.

Kristy Lee Cook, 24, Selma, OR
Linda Rondstadt’s "You’re No Good"
I’m having hair envy. She looks great and she sounds pretty good. Not the best of the night though. Still, she should be safe come tomorrow night. As the husband says, it was much better than last week.

Amanda Overmyer, 23, Mulberry, IN
Kansas’ "Carry On My Wayward Son"
Started out strong with the chorus but when she got into the meat of the song – the slower part – the vocals go astray and at one point, she looks as if she’s almost forgotten the words and her voice completely unravels into a pile of messiness. That’s too bad because I’m an Overmyer fan.

Alaina Whitaker, 16, Tulsa, OK
Olivia Newton-John’s "Hopelessly Devoted to You"
She delivers the same flavor of softness that Olivia Newton-John brought to it back in the 70s. I love singing this song but I don’t sing it well. Alaina, however, did a pretty good job despite a few pitch problems.

Alexandrea Lushington, 17, Douglasville, GA
Chicago’s "If You Leave Me Now"
Seems like an odd song choice, particularly for a 17-year-old. This is a far cry from what she gave us last week on "Spinning Wheel." I applaud her bravery but it just didn’t work for me. Based on her body language, I’ve got a feeling Alexandrea knows she made a wrong turn.
Kady Malloy, 18, Houston, TX
Heart’s "Magic Man"
Great outfit but the vocals lack the power a song like this deserves. As the man says, it was flat.

Asia’h Epperson, 19, Joplin, MO
Eric Carmen’s "All By Myself"
Asia’h looks absolutely beautifully but something is terribly flawed in her voice all the way through. Some people will remember the ending but I wouldn’t bother. As Simon comments, "Know your limitations."

I've put in red text the ladies' names I think are at risk. Now argue with me by commenting below or I'm not going to play along any more! BTW, I think Asia'h and Alexandrea stand the greatest chance of going home.

The Last Guy Standing Will Be ... DAVID ARCHULETA!!!

Perhaps a trend is afoot. Last week our American Idol 2008 contenders belted out hits of the 60s. This week … hold your breath … we’re jumping forward a decade to the 70s. These kids weren’t born then either.

Michael Johns, 29
Fleetwood Mac’s "Go Your Own Way"
My hot Aussie is not as polished as he was last week on "Light My Fire." In fact, I'd say it was very rough. Rickey Minor and the band sounded HOT!

Jason Castro, 20, Rockwall, TX
Andy Gibbs’ "I Just Want to Be Your Everything"
Jason was sounding pretty impressive and looking comfortable with guitar in tote but towards the end, he loses control of his voice. He may be at risk for going home this week.

Luke Menard, 29, Crawfordsville, IN
Queen's "Killer Queen"
I don’t remember his hair being so curly in previous weeks but it seems to suite him better. I’m surprised by his song choice, but I’m pleased to hear his vocals are much improved. I think it was an excellent song choice, after all.

Robbie Carrico, 26, Melbourne, FL
Foreigner’s "Hot Blooded"
The second the band fires up, I know Robbie has made an excellent choice in "Hot Blooded." While it’s a good performance, there’s nothing unique about his voice.

Danny Noriega, 18, Azusa, CA
Carpenters’ "Superstar"
This is absolutely awful from the first note and all the way throughout. For those of you who know my infatuation with all things Carpenters, yes – I will judge with more scrutiny on this one but I can definitely sing this song with more distinction and style than this punk did. Of course, my wonderful brother-in-law once said I sounded just like Karen Carpenter. Not so, but I’ll take the compliment. Enough about me. Any Carpenters'-respecting human walking the face of this earth should NOT vote in favor of Danny boy.

David Hernandez, 24, Glendale, AZ
The Temptations’ "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"
Best vocals so far tonight, but I’m not buying David H.’s "soulful" antics. Great finish. No, let’s make that – fantastic finish. While he sang it excellently, the song didn’t seem to "fit" him.

Jason Yeager, 28, Grand Prairie, TX
Doobie Brothers’ "Long Train Runnin’"
He’s smiling way too much and the performance is frighteningly cheesy. Vocals, however, are quite respectable. His looks kinda remind me of Donny Osmond – but he’s not as cute.

Chikezie Eze, 22, Inglewood, CA
Donny Hathaway’s "I Believe to My Soul"
Chikezie let’s his soul shine on this one. However, I’m not a Donny Hathaway fan. But since Chikezie is much improved tonight over last Tuesday, I’ll let that slide. Sneaking his name into the song was pretty clever too.

David Cook, 25, Blue Springs, MO
Free’s "All Right Now"
He’s great on the electric guitar which, unfortunately, took away from what we’re focusing on – and that should be the singing. Keeping that in mind, David C.’s voice ain’t half bad but he waits until the middle of the song to bring the attitude necessary to pull the song off. Regardless, it was an overall enjoyable performance.

David Archuleta, 17, Murray, UT
John Lennon’s "Imagine"
All right peeps – this is the dude we’ve been waiting to hear all night long. Will we be charmed and impressed yet again this week? The girls in the audience are cheering like mad at the mere mention of his name. This kid’s going places. What a tender delivery in which he makes this legendary song his own. His voice is controlled and flawless. There is no doubt that David A. is the only one getting my vote tonight. Held on to every note. I want to adopt him. But, I’ve said that before, haven’t I?

Danny and Jason Castro should go home. The husband says Jason Yeager and Luke Menard. He could be right. I hope I am.

What Do You Do With This Heap of Crap?

Who did we NOT vote for last night? The two guys and two girls who garnered the least amount of the 28 million votes sent in over the last two nights are going home tonight. Of course, we have to sit through some crap before we find out. By crap, I mean all 24 of these kids are dressed in 60s’ garb as they perform perhaps the worst group medley in American Idol history. This is worse than cheesy.

Back from the break and we get a review of the guys' performances from Tuesday night. Then, with very little chatter, Ryan abrupty tells 17-year-old Garrett Haley goodbye. Garrett doesn’t seem shocked, but I am – and disappointed too.

Now Ryan announces that the next AI Top 24 victim is Amy Davis. We all saw this departure coming. Perhaps she doesn’t. The most unfortunate part of her demise is that we have to suffer through her crackling rendition of "Where the Boys Are." I can’t believe they sent the Air Force Chick (from the auditions) away and kept this hideousness.

Judge Randy Jackson, who toured with Journey back in the 80s, has a new album out and none other than our own Paula Abdul has a cut on it. The video is enjoyable and demonstrates the fact that Paula is more famous for her signature dance moves than she is as a singer. Plus, she looks great!

Instead of switching back to the guys, Ryan asks Joanne Borgella and Amanda Overmyer to take center stage. He then announces everyone sitting on the sofa is safe and will be back again next week. After the break, we find out which one has to pack their bags.

It’s the moment of truth and we learn that Joanne gets the disappointing news that she gets to sing her swan song, "I Say a Little Prayer for You." Well, I reluctantly admit that my husband correctly guessed tonight’s bottom two girls.
So, who will be joining Garrett, Amy and Joanne out the door? It’s either going to be Chikezie Eze or Colton Berry. Will I get at least one guy’s departure correct? Unfortunately, no, as I get to hear Colton perform "Suspicious Minds" one last time. You have to be freakin’ kiddin’ me. I can’t believe Chikezie got more votes than Garrett and Colton!

I am quite saddened – depressed even – for the two young men going home tonight. Where is the justice? Oh yeah, America did, at least, get it right with the girls. Well, we’re down to the Top 20 so brace for a brand new week which kicks off with another hour and a half next Tuesday night.

BTW ... have you voted in this week's poll in the upper left hand corner of this page? Time is running out!

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

According to the husband, who evidently doesn’t have as much work on his plate as I do, he scanned American Idol-related blogs today and discovered that Carly Smithson was missing from the audience during the guys’ performances last night. Of course, that got the rumor mill flowing today but as tonight’s show opens, Carly is at the front of the line. You know that flu bug that was going around here a few weeks ago? It seems to have made it’s way to California as the girls have been stricken with flu-like symptoms. Will that affect tonight’s performances? Let’s find out.
1. Kristy Lee Cook, 24, Selma, OR
She sold her favorite horse to pay her way to the Philadelphia auditions and it looks like she made a good investment. Singing "Rescue Me" with a bit of twang, Kristy Lee’s performance is nothing more than dressed-up karaoke to me. Randy says it was pitchy and rough around the edges. Paula says how tough it is to go first. Boo hoo. Simon says the song didn’t suit her and the performance was robotic. I just wish I looked that good when I have the flu.
2. Joanne Borgella, 25, Hoboken, NJ
She was great in rehearsals but tonight on "Forever/Say a little prayer for you" she delivers plenty of passion but her voice sounds flu-ish.
3. Alaina Whitaker, 16, Tulsa, OK
The youngest contestant of the season also boasts some fabulous hair. But really, how does she sound? Alaina offers a very mature voice on "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday." Although a bit pitchy, she still gives us the best performance of the evening so far.
4. Amanda Overmyer, 23, Mulberry, IN
This is one of the contestants I’ve been anxious to see perform at this level. Will Amanda do us proud? Rocker chick stays true to herself but I have absolutely no idea what she’s singing. Her voice is different from anything else we’ve ever heard throughout 7 seasons and for that, I’m a fan. But this song … umm … I’m not sure what to do. The crowd loves it.
5. Amy Davis, 25, Cedar Lake, IN
Amy tries her chops at "Where the Boys Are" and 30 seconds in, I’m not sure she’s hit a single note. Is it nerves? Flu? Dude, this isn’t good at all.
6. Brooke White, 24, Van Nuys, CA
David Cook sang "Happy Together" last night and sang it very well. Brooke gives it a try but takes a different approach. She delivers a breathy, yet enjoyable performance, but not as enjoyable as it needs to be.
7. Alexandrea Lushington, 17, Douglasville, GA
This girl is from one of my favorite Georgia towns to just go and shop for things I need. I miss the trees, the dry lakes, the winding roads … but I digress. Alexandrea makes an interesting song choice in "Spinning Wheel" and surprisingly, she gives us the best "performance" of the evening. Her singing is pretty dope too so I see good things for this chick. The husband says "Surprisingly good."
8. Kady Malloy, 18, Houston, TX
It was first made popular in the 60s, but I know it thanks to Phil Collins’ remake back in the 80s. On "Groovy Kind of Love," Kady gives us a soulful, yet, sultry, voice. She’s absolutely beautiful in her evening gown. For me, this is perhaps the best vocal of the evening.
9. Asia’h Epperson, 19, Joplin, MO
This lovely young lady’s father passed away the day before she auditioned and she’s stayed strong through it all. It’s probably no coincidence that she’s chosen to sing "Piece of My Heart" Asia’h has a good voice but something seems to be missing in the beginning. She gets a little strength in the lungs towards the end.
10. Remiele Malubay, 20, Miramar, FL
I love Dusty Springfield but will I love Remiele on "You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me"? Nice, nice, nice voice. My only disappointment is that she doesn’t put the power behind her vocals on the chorus because that’s what makes this song work – at least that’s what worked for Ms. Springfield. She does bring it on a little bit towards the end. The crowd loves it much!
11. Syesha Mercado, 21, Miami, FL
I know this is a singing competition but if they gave out "PRETTY" awards, this beauty would definitely take home the trophy. Best "EARRINGS" awards? She wins that too. American Idol? Syesha rocks the house with "Tobacco Road" but I don’t think that song choice is doing her voice any favors. A lot of people are going to disagree with me.
12. Carly Smithson, 24, San Diego, CA
Stricken with the flu, this Irish native is …Right away I’m hating the song choice but absolutely loving the voice. She needs to work on the way she presents herself if she wants to win though. Vocally, though, they saved the best for last. "That’s what the show is all about," says Randy adding how well she did considering she suffered the worst flu in history. I can’t say because I got my flu shot like a good girl. Randy continues to say that Carly delivered the best vocal out of the Top 24 and Carly adds that "Sick is not an excuse." Paula likes Carly’s beautiful inflections. Simon, of course, doesn’t get it, and says the song was way too old-fashioned. Simon needs to be stabbed in the ears.
Bottom two girls and bottom two guys will be going home tomorrow night so make sure you vote for your favorite girl tonight! I’ve highlighted the names of those I feel are at risk tomorrow night. And hey, post a comment or I’ll quit blogging!!! That’s my "Idol" threat. Ha ha.

All Eyes on

I certainly don't have two hours to spare for this show, but I'm a sucker for singers, so here we go! Tonight, the guys are up first and I'm ready to vote! Let's compare notes!
1. David Hernandez, 24, Glendale, AZ
David H. (There are three "Davids") sings "In the Midnight Hour." He has decent chops and sets expectations high for tonight's performances, which will focus on music of the 60s. He doesn't have a strong finish though. Randy agrees and says the competition is on. Paula notes that David H. has the vocals. Simon says, "It was actually better than I thought it was gonna be" and encouraged him to loosen up.
2. Chikezie Eze, 22, Inglewood, CA
He's a sharp dresser but I feel he either tried to change "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday" up too much or completely mauled it. The audience loved it though. Randy encourages him to make the older songs fresh. Paula gushes foolishly followed by her typical babbling. Simon says, "I absolutely hated the whole performance" and even went on to insult the threads. Now, that's just wrong. But not as wrong as Chikezie snapped back at Simon. That could end up hurting him.
3. David Cook, 25, Blue Springs, MO
WOW right off the bat. Singing "Happy Together," David C.'s voice is a little weak for the way he's trying to deliver it but still, very, very enjoyable. This is a fun, rockin' performance! Randy's lovin' it and so does Paula. Simon felt he shouted the song in the middle but he seems to like it nonetheless.
4. Jason Yeager, 28, Grand Prairie, TX
This guy looks like one of the Lettermen - for those of you who remember who the Lettermen were. His voice is pleasant on "Moon River," but nothing more than pleasant. Dinner theater for sure. Randy encourages him to not lose his concentration while performing. Paula gets gushy about her first ballet recital being to that song. Simon hits it dead on calling it a cruise ship performance.
5. Robbie Carrico, 26, Melbourne, FL
Singing "One," Robbie's voice is all right but the song's arrangement is quite distracting. I'm not sure what to make of this performance. Randy likes the version though and says "You move me, baby." Paula calls him "authentic." Simon says it's the only performance tonight that has any semblance of making sense.
6. David Archuleta, 17, Murray, UT
David A.'s "You Better Shop Around" demonstrates that his voice could use a little fine-tuning. I think that will come if he gets the opportunity to stick in this competition for any length of time. He's terribly young and cute as a button. He'll definitely get the vote of Tweener girls. David A. finishes stronger than a west Texas wind though! Randy calls it "brilliant" and says he is born with a gift. Paula calls the song choice brave and bold. Simon says, "When you got it, you got it." He even goes on to say it's the best performance of the night. Just as I confess to my husband that I want to adopt this child, Ryan says, "You can only vote for him, you actually can't adopt him!" My home is TAPPED!!!
7. Danny Noriega, 18, Azusa, CA
This pretty boy thinks he's hot. Singing "Jailhouse Rock" he proves he he can sing okay and perform well. There's still something about him though that gives me the creeps. Maybe it's his arrogance. Maybe it's the way he ends this song. Eww. Randy likes it that Danny's having a good time but says the vocals are only okay. Paula babbles then gets to the point and calls the song safe. Shut up Paula. Your hair doesn't even look good. Simon calls the performance "verging on grotesque." In the banter with Ryan, Danny snaps his attitude in Simon's direction, proving my point that there's something creepy about this freaky.
8. Luke Menard, 29, Crawfordsville, IN
Luke looks like a Luke. Pleasant voice on "Everyone's Talkin' At Me" and a delightful ending but no "Wow" factor. Too safe. Randy calls it pitchy. First real bad review of the night. Paula agrees and instead of shutting up there, she babbles. Simon calls it forgettable. I agree.
9. Colton Berry, 18, Staunton, VA
Earlier, he compared his looks to Ellen DeGeneres and he's absolutely correct. From his looks to his humor - Colton is the offspring of Ellen. He sings "Suspicious Minds," one of the few Elvis songs I actually like. Not perfect, but definitely much more enjoyable than I expected. Vocals are more impressive than expected. I didn't want to like this little terd. Randy says he did a pretty good job. Paula says it's nice to see a different side of him but says it wasn't his best performance but appreciated the eager attempt. Simon says he has no relevance in today's musical industry. I disagree. Simon goes on to be ruder, if you can imagine. I'm starting to take issue with our resident Brit.
10. Garrett Haley, 17, Elida, OH
He looks shy, meek and out of his element. Garrett admits he has an issue with confidence. Singing Neil Sedaka's style of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." Not a "Wow" performance but impressive though. Best voice of the evening, in my opinion, but not the best performance. Randy encourages him to bring something new to it and calls it boring. He couldn't be more wrong. "Be courageous" says Paula. Simon drops buckets of unwelcomed insults. Garrett responds that he's going to take the judges' constructive criticism and learn from it. What a good, genuine kid. I'm ticked with the judges for sure now.
11. Jason Castro, 20, Rockwall, TX
My husband says, and I must agree, that our second Jason in the competition looks like John Travolta. Let's clarify that the looks are similar facially. Jason C. has tons of grubby dreads. Playing "What a Day for a Daydream" on the guitar. Strong vocals. Not my favorite song but he could win my ears over as having the best vocals of the night. Randy recognizes the few pitch problems but says it was all right. Paula says he blew her away and called the performance "effortless." Simon says Jason C. is one of the top two performers of the night and calls it "terrific." They've been hiding this gem from us.
12. Michael Johns, 29, Buckhead, GA
Speaking of gems, I must announce: HOTTIE AUSSIE ALERT!!! He lives in Buckhead, Georgia now and if you ever make your way to Atlanta, Buckhead is definitely the place to hop the nightclubs and pick up hot, successful guys. If cute slackers are more your type, there's plenty of them available too! Now, back to HOTTIE'S performance on "Light My Fire." He can light my fire! The vocals aren’t as good as they were on his Queen performance from last week. Regardless, he's hot. HOT, HOT, HOT!!! I'm such a girl at heart! Randy loves him and calls him "the bomb." "Excellent way to end the night," concurs Paula. Simon calls him the "most consistent contestant" and adds that he’s "just got it." He's only a decade younger than I am. The husband is younger than I am too, but not THAT young!
So, whom are you voting for tonight? Did I mention Michael Johns had a GREAT butt? Gosh, do I vote for hottie, cutie or sweetie? Who should go home? Which two are going to fall through the cracks? Let me know because I certainly don't! The husband feels we haven't seen an American Idol in the guy group. Do you agree? HOLD ON!!! We just compared notes and the anonymous husband agrees with me that Chikezie and Danny Noriega are going home tomorrow night. Luke's at risk too.

Trimming to 24 Finalists

Let's get to it. The judges are pouring over the contestants' profiles and performances and more than half of the remaining 50 are about to get some bad news.
Ronald Hodge is up first and also is the first one out of the competition. He's quickly followed by Nina Shaw, Mycale Guyton and Lisa Aukerman.
One contestant I hope is not heading out the door is Carly Smithson, the Irish chick with the amazing voice. She is now heading up the elevator for the long walk to learn her fate. After a guidance counseling session from Paula, Carly finds out she's sticking around. There is good in this world!
David Cook, who in Hollywood rounds stunk it up with the guitar, sneaks a spot in the Top 24, but I don't think he'll stick around long once America gets to vote.
Someone with definite Top 10 potential is respiratory nurse Amanda Overmyer. Her husky voice and overall package earn her a spot in the Top 24 too.
So many others aren't so fortunate. After a brief spotlight on the rejects, our attention turns to the young David Archuleta. Simon delivers the fabulous news that this kid, through a unanimous decision, is in the Top 24.
Christie Lee Cook makes it through too but then tragedy strikes. You see, we have a DVR/cable box through Suddenlink. We recorded American Idol tonight and are watching it about two hours after it airs because once again, I came home late from the real job. During the recording process, a weather alert was sent through the cable box, causing every single channel to revert to The Weather Channel. The husband acted quickly and put a video tape (gasp!) into one of the VCRs (gasp even more!) and salvaged the rest of the show for us. While we miss a few minutes, my husband is once again my hero!
Now we're watching the video and learn that Brooke White, Danny Noriega and several others it through.
As more spots get filled, the contestants still waiting grow even more anxious to learn the news. Contestants' names are displayed only so briefly so I miss a few of them but at this point, who cares? Well, I guess I kind of do as I'm saddened by the news that Drew the farmer doesn't make it.
The nerves hit Michael Johns, the Aussie, but he shouldn't sweat it. The judges decide unanimously that this cutie is in our Top 24. Girls, young and old, should cheer!
Syesha Mercado, who had lost her voice during the Hollywood rounds, is in the Top 24 too!
Robbie Carrico, the rocker dude from Miami, makes it through by the grace of Randy and Paula.
Asia'h Epperson, whose dad died the day before she auditioned, is now in front of the judges. She's on board for the amazing ride. Hooray!
Josiah Leming, whose final performance in Hollywood was not well received as he dismissed the band and decided to go acapella, is about to learn his fate. He made a dangerous move the judges did not like and it apparently weighed heavily on the judges' decision as Josiah learns it's the end of the road. I would have liked the opportunity to see more of his talent. The good part is we won't see any more of his emotional outbreaks.
Now we're down to only four contestants - two guys and two girls. The guys are up first and immediately, Colton Berry and Kyle Ensley learn that their fates were not a unanimous decision among the judges. As Colton learns he's the lucky one, Simon makes it clear that he's really disappointed that Kyle is the one going home. Regardless, Kyle is going to make an admirable politician one day.
Cardin McKinney, the professional musician from Nashville faces Joanne, the plus-size model. The judges torture them with questions before revealing that Joanne makes it.
It will get fun next week as we get to choose the castaways. I can't wait, can you?

Who Stays and Who Goes?

Did you see Prison Break last night? OMG!!!
Can you believe the state of Georgia is considering a University of Florida license plate? NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! As us UGA grads like to say, "Don't say the 'F' word!"
Oh, you're here for American Idol, I suppose.
It's the first day of Hollywood week with 164 contestants arriving on a Monday with nothing but their dreams of stardom. We're promised bigger and better talent this year and after last year's dreadful season, I certainly hope so.
Brooke White, who's never seen an R-rated movie, is the first contestant of the day. For the first time in Idol history, contestants are allowed to play their own instruments. Brooke is on the keyboards with "Beautiful." Simon says she's got "great, great potential." I concur.
Not everyone fares as well Brooke and we learn that a YES from the judges means a free ride through to Thursday and a NO means they get a second chance on Wednesday.
David Hernandez relies on his voice only. The most impressive voice and performance so far tonight. Judges seem just as pleased as I am.
Remember the Rock-N-Roll nurse? She was in a terrible accident the week before the Hollywood round, but with stitches in her head and two cracked ribs, Amanda Overmyer pushes through singing the Doors' "Light My Fire." I don't think it's her best, but her voice is so unique and enjoyable, the judges better send her through to Thursday. While they do, Simon cautions her "sound" could become monotonous.
Even after a warning from Simon, several contestants forget lyrics. Do you suppose he jinxed them?
Day Two brings us 80 contestants who hopefully are better than Day One. I have high expectations out of that homeless kid, Josiah Leming plays the keyboards and demonstrates his incredible vocal range. The crowd loves it, the judges love it and I possibly love it. "Out of all the auditions, I think this is the is one I'm gonna remember," Simon says.
Several more step up to the plate and and get sent through to Thursday. Most of them are just so-so to me, but Carly Smithson is going to give a lot of other contestants a run for their fortunes. She's absolutely fantastic!

While David Cook's vocals are fine on "Everything I Do, I Do It for You," I find it rather boring. Randy likes his range and tone. Paula calls it soothing. Simon finds it boring. He makes it through.
Long-haired Robbie Currico sounds fabulous as do several people who follow while some are not so fabulous.
Rememeber the next Governor of Oklahoma, Kyle Ensley? He's not that great on the Hollywood stage but the audience likes it. Paula calls it corny. "Abysmal" is what Simon delivers before walking of stage while Paula babbles something about Kyle's spirit.
Forty-eight contestants got a free pass to the final Hollywood round and are able to relax, unlike 116 others. Wednesday is here and it's time for second and last chances. Not too many manage to wow over the judges this time either as almost 100 people get cut from the second chance group.

Now it's the final day of auditions in Hollywood and tensions are running high.
David Archuleta sings Bryan Adam's "Heaven" and I'm liking it. This kid has oodles of potential at the ripe old age of 16. The judges are equally impressed.
Kyle Ensley is back and he knows he has to impress. He's very pleasant on "You Raise Me Up" but he's no Josh Grobin. Randy's feelin' it. Paula calls it safe. Simon calls it a good little audition. Kyle gets three yesses.
Syesha Mercadohas struggled with sickness all week. Hollywood must have the same flu/stomach crud that's been going around here. This girl's been sick? Sick with star power! Marvelous! Randy thinks it's great. Paula calls it amazing. "You did it. You just did it," says Simon. We'll need to watch this one!
Australian Michael Johns takes a risk with Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Turns out this is a perfect song choice for his voice. Yeppers. I like this one. Brilliant. "Best audition of the day," according to Simon.
The Irish girl who I've loved since her original audition, Carly Smithson, sings Hearts' "Alone." Her voice is sultry and smooth but she needs to work on stage presence. All three judges are happy and several more make it through too.
Josiah is the last contestant of the day and for the first time, he crumbles under pressure. He doesn't even get through rehearsals with the band and takes it a step further by dismissing them as he enters the stage. Josiah chooses to sing "Stand By Me" acapella. While I love this dude's singing style, Randy really hates the performance and Paula says it didn't work. Even so, Randy thinks Josiah is worth one more shot based on previous performances. Paula and Simon agree. The only thing that annoys me about this kid is that he's too emotional.
After ticking me off with the Georgia/Florida license plate crap, the husband mocks the length of my blog, saying I should just stream Idol video. MEN!!! (Yes, I've edited it down even though it's still lengthy.)
Back to the show. Have you noticed everyone has blue tongues? Wazzupwitdat?
The Top 50 are celebrating upstairs while downstairs, judges whittle it down to 24. Final judgement takes place during tomorrow night's one hour episode. I hope to see you then and I hope to see your comments below!

It's Just Like Every Episode Leading Up to Hollywood

Thank you once again for your patience. I'll do better next week, promise! I wound up working late again last night so I was determined to leave on time tonight. That didn't work out so well either but at least the husband and I were able to power up the DVR and watch last night's show featuring the best and the rest.

The first one we see going to Hollywood is Amy Davis, and it ain't got a thing to do with her voice. No folks, this 25-year-old is extremely blessed in the chest. Randy and Simon seemed to enjoy them so much, I doubt they even heard a note of her "Blue Bayou" rendition. Let's just say, Paula's vote would not have mattered here.

Up next is Tiffany McCambell who claims her voice was a gift from God himself. As she sings "Halelujiah," all I can think is that I'll be singing the Lord's praise when this audition is over. The judges feel the same.

Time now for tongue in cheek. Remember the theme to "Three's Company"? That's the background music to a love triangle involving twins Chris and Cory Lane, who have both dated the sweetest southern twang I've heard since leaving Georgia - Ashley Lawing. While the twins awful rap isn't up to par with AI standards, Ashley is ready with charm and self-confidence. Even that wasn't good enough for the judges, though, as her vocals absolutely "Hoovered." Her dog, Panda, was favored upon greater by all three judges.

Remember this name: Cardin Lee McKinney. She's absolutely FABULOUS from the first note to the last. Simon, however, doesn't like it. Paul calls her voice "mature." Randy thinks she can grow. Thankfully, she barely makes it through to Hollywood and I can't help but think Simon is terribly mistaken. This girl's voice could win the whole shebang.

Her audition is followed by JoAnne Borgella. Could it be two great voices back-to-back? Folks, let me tell ya, JoAnne is going to give Cardin Lee a run for her money. This girl is a plus-size model and she is stunning both in appearance and in vocal talents. How in the world does she also receive a NO from Simon. What a terd! At least the other two judges seem to have a bit of sense ... or, at least, I think so.

Alicia Stelzl is a bleached blonde from California and she describes her voice as "unique." Indeed it is. I can't help but hear Dolly Parton in her voice though and Randy and Paula are thinking the same thing. Amazingly, the judges tell Alicia to go learn a Dolly Parton song and come back. Through the magic of televsion, we go to commercial break and then come right back to Alicia's second chance at stardom. She can't be a dumb blonde though because she takes advantage of the opportunity, learns a song she's too young to have ever heard and sings it fairly well. She has a future in Dollywood ... er, we mean Hollywood.

Now some torture including a guy whose foul language would make a sailor blush.

Some R&B wannabe, Joshua Moreland, has a very high-pitched voice but I think it could work for him. Judges don't think so though as he joins the ranks of Idol rejects.

Next is a humorous vignette demonstrating how Simon goes out of his way to mispronounce names. It seems to be a game to him.

Chikezie Eze was rejected last year and he's evidently been fine-tuning the vocals because his inner-Luther Vandross is charming. We all know what that means - Simon's not at all impressed. Randy feels him this time around as does Paula so Chikezie is going to Hollywood.

Danny Noriega buckled under pressure last year and he's back and well ... let's just say that "Proud Mary" is his song of choice. Oddly, his voice has much potential and it's certainly not a voice you'd expect out of this kid who has realized the importance of being no one but himself. Smart. Judges shower him with praise and a ticket to Hollywood.

There you have it - 164 make it through to Hollywood and some of those heads will be on next week's chopping block.

Is Atlanta Hot, or Not?

Sorry for the delay in this post but every now and then, you're stuck at the job that pays the bills. If only I could actually find a way to make money at this blogging thing. After all, I have three of 'em. Pathetic, I know.

Speaking of pathetic, I was really looking forward to American Idol's return visit to Atlanta. I wasn't born there but at the tender age of 7, my parents packed up their family of four brats and dislocated us to the deep south. Fulton County and College Park with the zip code of 30349 was our new home and the Atlanta airport was basically in our backyard. Five years later, during white flight (although the move was for business purposes ... just so happened we were white and still are) we wound up in Fayette County - just one down from Fulton. So, for all intents ad purposes, I consider Atlanta and its surrounding areas my "hometown." Howdy to McIntosh High School's Class of '87!

Back to pathetic. Everything I had hoped for out of Hotlanta seemed to cease and desist and before I realized it, I had lost an hour of my life. I just wasn't that impressed by last night's contestants. Here are a few of the highlights though ...

The first kid up is Josh Jones who puts his chops to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now." Since I was writing rather than typing in front of the tube last night, I didn't notice something that seemed to rather bother Simon. Apparently, Josh was doing something distracting, maybe even "demonic" with his eyes. Always keeping it fresh, Simon asked Josh to sing with his back to the judges, that way he wouldn't have to look at his weird eye movements. That still didn't help Simon but Randy and Paula liked it enough that they sent Josh through to Hollywood. To bad Josh doesn't have a more attractive derriere.

Sob story of the night truly brought tears to my eyes and sent Paula off set to compose herself. Eighteen-year-old Asia'h Epperson called her dad a few days before to let him know she was auditioning for American Idol. Thirty minutes after their conversation, Asia'h's brother calls to let her know that their dad had just died in a car wreck. Somehow, she's managed to pull it all together to fulfill dreams her dad had for her and she performs "How Do I Live?" It's a bit pitchy but there's a voice in there under all that sorrow. Some think it was a sypathy vote but I think the judges did the right thing in sending her through to Hollywood.

Up next is a girl who is, like, sooo annoying. First off, Brooke Helvie is a Florida Gator and believe me, us Georgia Bulldogs do not like the "F" word. To make matters worse, this perky pest is a pageant princess who hopefully couldn't be more obnoxious if she tried. Like Simon, I was really hoping this girl couldn't sing. Unfortunately, she could and that means we'll be seeing more of her. Ugh.

Time now for a musical montage that is so bad, I didn't even realize it was Fergie's "Glamorous." Probably wouldn't matter though as I don't care for that particular song.

Who else makes it through to Hollywood? Alex Lushington of Douglasville, Georgia - one of my favorite places to shop because it's where I first discovered Bed, Bath & Beyond if memory serves me correctly. Will Alex be one of my favorites too? Doubtful. Her voice isn't my "thing" but the judges like her so yay for her.

I'm not immediately liking Amanda Overmyer because they have several clips of her on the back of her motorcycle, helmet-free. Ever know anyone who'd still be alive today if they would have worn their helmet? Yeah, me too. Then she announces she'll sing Janis Joplin and I'm like, "NOOOOOOO!!!!!" But actually, I like her. The judges ask her to sing something else and she rips into some rather impressive Elvis. I've got a feeling we'll be seeing much more of Amanda and I think the judges do too with all three voting her through to Hollywood. She has attitude, personality and this nurse is just plain refreshing.

Enough about Amanda, it's past time to wrap this blog up. The night closes out with Josiah Leming. Originally from Morristown, Tenn., Leming has lived in his car for the last year, pursuing his musical impulses. It pays off, too, in a weird way. Being as he was from Tennessee, I couldn't understand why his voice was flirting with a British accent. Somehow it works for him and the judges like him a lot.

So that does it from Atlanta with 20 hopefulls through to Hollywood. Tonight's show is being tauted as "Best of the Rest." Do they mean that in a good way, or a bad way?

Who's your favorite Idol to date?

As odd as it may sound, I can basically tell who is visiting the Idol America blog based on how they vote. With that said, a big "Howdy" going out to my peeps back at the AGN. So, it was a tough vote for me between Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Simply because she was the sole reason I even started watching Idol, I had to pick Kelly. Here are the results of last week's poll:

Kelly Clarkson
3 (50%)

Ruben Studdard
0 (0%)

Fantasia Barrino
0 (0%)

Carrie Underwood
2 (33%)

Taylor Hicks
1 (16%)

Jordin Sparks
0 (0%)

Votes so far: 6

I can't help but wonder if the poll results would be much different if this blog originated in a more diverse city.
